Summer’s in full swing, and there’s plenty of ways to spend your time under the sun. But as temperatures rise and things start to dry out, it’s easy to fall into the trap of wasting excessive amounts of water. This season, save time, money, and water by replacing old equipment and habits with newer, more eco-friendly products and practices. Inspired by Rinnai, the number one selling brand of tankless water heaters in North America, and their energy solutions for water usage, we’ve compiled five ways to conserve water at home this summer.

1. Lessen Your Usage

Cut down on your shower time by just a couple of minutes and consider upgrading older shower heads to more efficient, water-conserving ones. Be sure to turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or washing your hands to save gallons of water.

2. Fix Leaks

Small leaks can cause big problems in your home, they can also be a relatively easy water conservation solution. Not only are leaky fixtures wasteful and costly, but they can also cause severe damage to any surrounding floors, ceilings, and cabinets. Start by checking all the sinks in your home for dripping, but don’t forget about toilets. Place several drops of colored dye into the toilet tank. If the color seeps into the toilet bowl, you’re potentially wasting water and should get it fixed.

3. Install a Tankless Water Heater

Whether you’re looking to save space, energy, or money, a tankless water heater accomplishes all three. Rather than using a large storage tank with water that needs to be kept warm, tankless heaters only heat the water in use. This means that you won’t have to run the water and wait for it to warm. You’ll have a constant supply of on-demand hot water that uses less energy than a traditional tank. In addition to being more efficient, tankless heaters have a greater life expectancy than traditional storage heaters. 4. Get a Rain Barrel

Place a rain barrel outside to gather the rainfall. Use what’s collected for watering the trees, gardens, or flowers on your property instead of a hose. To learn more about the process of buying, installing, and using a rain barrel,  there’s a terrific overview that you can read here.

5. Cover Your Pool

If you have a beautiful pool in the backyard of your Toll home, make sure to cover it when you’re not using it. This technique prevents your pool water from evaporating, preserving hundreds of gallons of water in the process. If you need help selecting the correct cover for your pool, check out these helpful tips from Swim University here.
